Fill in the Blank

Cursor blinking... a blank waiting to be filled up with information... "Occupation"... hmm...

For the first time in my professional life, I have been unemployed for more than a couple of months. It has been ten months and counting... That's the longest time that I've been without the safety net of formal employment.

It doesn't really matter if I have been unemployed by choice. It just hit me that I don't really know what to put on the dreaded blank.

Let's see... housewife sounds too cliche. What's a "housewife" anyway? I used to smile at the women who'd call themselves "simple" housewives -- now there's an oxymoron if I ever heard one! The words "simple" and "housewife" should never appear together.

And then...lightbulb moment! A few keystrokes later, voila!

Blank duly filled. "Complicated" housewife.

Now that's more like it. For the first time in my life, I have a full-time occupation that I realized I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.
